Headboards and Footboards

A plain bed quickly becomes appealing when a headboard and footboard are added. They can provide an upscale appearance for even a downscaled bedroom.

But which headboard is the right one for your bedroom?

With a variety of styles and types, choosing a headboard, and footboard, can be as difficult as picking your favorite candy from a candy store’s display case. Feasting your eyes on the choices, you might wonder:

  • Would a traditional headboard with overlay details add an elegant touch?
  • Would a headboard that features a bookcase and display shelf provide needed storage and still be attractive?
  • Would a wrought iron headboard with scrollwork dress up a plain bed?
  • Would 2 headboards, 1 for the head and 1 for the foot, add extra pizzazz?

Most headboards and footboards can fit a standard bed frame. So first consider the different styles to see which of them complements your bed and bedroom.

Styles
  • Traditional or classic – With wood high arches, acanthus overlay details, dark finishes
  • Contemporary – Metal frames, straight-line designs, microfiber panels, leather materials
  • Country – Bookcase headboards with some, divided cubbies and display shelves
  • Transitional – Typically with metal and wood combinations
  • Nautical or cottage – White panels, decorative molding, louvered accents
  • Tropical – Natural materials such as rattan, abaca and woven field grasses
  • Mission/Shaker – Slatted panels framed by turned posts and topped with ball finials

Next consider the type of headboard and footboard that fits with your furnishings:

Types
  • Wood – Hardwoods, composite woods
  • Metal – Wrought iron, tubular steel or other metal
  • Mixed media – Combination of wood and metal

Finally, look at the various features that come with specific styles and types. Because some features are available only with specific headboards, your choice in features may help you narrow your options in headboards.

Features
  • Bookcases and shelves
  • Mirrored bookcase
  • Integrated light in headboard
  • Choices in finishes
  • Some headboards also attach as matching footboard
